Business in The Community will be hosting a free webinar at 15.00 – 16.00 (UK time) on the 31st March 2011 to inform business leaders about alternatives to commuting and other business travel. Travelling sustainably for, to and from work is enabling organisations to reduce costs, be more productive and make more efficient use of resources. Business, people and the environment all benefit.

UK businesses therefore have an important role to play in helping to improve this – and there are real benefits of doing so.

In today’s world full of economic uncertainty, the need for cost control and efficiency has never been greater. Businesses need to become leaner and more effective – more so now than ever before and we are all looking for new ways to do this.  Something that is not being readily adopted by many businesses involves how we work and how we travel on a daily basis. It’s become far too habitual and we are missing opportunities which is costing us financially, socially and environmentally.

  • Transport accounts for 29% of the UK’s total carbon dioxide emissions (2006 Netcen Data). It is also the only major sector in which carbon emissions continue to rise.
  • Almost 70% of UK transport emissions come from road transport and more than half of that is from cars.  Personal car travel is the single biggest source of personal CO2 emissions in the UK (DECC 2009) and commuting and business travel accounts for 38% of this.
  • Road congestion is estimated to cost the UK over £20 billion annually (BCC The Congestion Question 2008)
Driving for work is the most dangerous work-related activity performed by employees in the UK. Around 20 people are killed and 220 seriously injured each week in crashes while using the road to drive to, from or for work.
  • The average UK commuter spends 47 working days a year commuting (almost one working day per week)

The ways2work webinar, with speakers from BITC and businesses already reaping the benefits of reducing work-related travel impacts, will show you how travelling more sustainably and using technology as an alternative to travel will enable your business to:

  • Reduce costs, improve resource efficiency
  • Reduce absence, improve productivity
  • Reduce carbon emissions, improve your reputation
